Over 12,000 students and fresh graduates took part in the trendence Graduate Barometer 2011 – Malaysian Edition this year. The results of the survey determined the ranking of Malaysia’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers for 2011.

Conducted by GTI Media and powered by trendence, Europe’s leading research institute, the annual online survey was held over a period of six months from March to September. Among other things, the survey recorded a higher degree of participation compared with last year – gathering responses from 71 universities in 2011 compared to 66 universities in 2010. It also marked a greater level of awareness and recognition of the Malaysia’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers brand amongst both respondents and graduate employers.

Most important of all, the survey sheds light on the latest graduate recruitment trends in Malaysia. In 2011, the top characteristics that students and fresh graduates looked for in a first employer included training opportunities, professional/career development and personal development. These findings bring to light the shift in the demands and expectations of students and graduates from last year, as the 2010 respondents chose promotion opportunities, work-life balance and job security as some of the factors behind employer attractiveness.

This year, the Big Four professional services firms topped the list with PwC as Graduate Employer of the Year. Ernst & Young, which was the first runner up in 2009 and winner in 2010, finished as first runner up followed by KPMG and Deloitte as second runner up and third runner up, respectively. PwC is the first organisation to be named winner twice in the history of the awards in Malaysia.

The sector winners in 2011 are as follows:

Accounting & Professional Services – Ernst & Young

Banking & Financial Services – Maybank

ICT & Multimedia – IBM Malaysia

Insurance – Great Eastern Life Assurance

Telecommunications – DiGi Telecommunications

Broadcasting/Media – MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems (ASTRO)

Leisure, Travel & Hospitality – Genting Malaysia

Consulting – PwC

Property & Construction – Sime Darby

Energy/Oil & Gas/Utilities – Shell Malaysia.

The Malaysia’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers Awards 2011, which was officiated by Deputy Minister of Human Resources, Yang Berhormat Senator Dato’ Maznah Mazlan, marked the fourth successful event of its kind to be held in Malaysia. Similar award evenings have since become annual affairs in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, and Singapore.

This year’s full results will be published in the Malaysia’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2011 directory, which will be distributed at top universities in Malaysia and abroad in 2012. To read the 2010 edition which contains findings from last year’s survey, log on to www.malaysias100.com.

And their numbers are rising. With more than 13,000 voters from universities in Malaysia and around the world determining the Malaysia’s 100 award winners last year alone, the awards are getting more competitive and glamorous with each passing year.

The winners of Malaysia’s 100 Awards are decided based on the outcome of the Malaysian Graduate Barometer which captures and analyses responses from students and fresh graduates from universities in Malaysia and abroad.

Conducted by GTI Media, the annual survey examines the preferences, priorities and influences of university students and fresh graduates when selecting their first employer after leaving their alma mater. By collectively presenting the voice of these young people, the survey recognises the strength of employer brands on campuses.

The findings can therefore be used by companies to gauge how effective their branding strategies are in attracting serious, motivated and career-driven graduates.

“We launched the survey because it adds value to the branding strategies of graduate employers so that they are more targeted and relevant to fresh graduates,” says GTI Media publishing director, Michele Lam.

Apart from enabling students and fresh graduates to vote on their employment preferences, the survey also allows them to express their opinion on their own university or college experience in preparing them for the working world.

By doing so, the survey also aims to provide objective feedback to universities and colleges on their ability to cater to industry demands of fresh graduates.

Thus, the two-pronged approach of providing specific input to higher education institutions and employers of fresh graduates underlines the importance of tertiary education to the Malaysian economy.

The Malaysia’s 100 Awards is also fast gaining acceptance and prominence among industry players and conglomerates, if the impressive list of Malaysia’s leading graduate employers across 11 different sectors is anything to go by.

The top ranked spots last year were dominated by the accounting and professional services industry, with big names such as Ernst & Young (E&Y), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), KPMG and Deloitte fighting for top honours.

Last year, E&Y stamped its mark as the most popular graduate employer in 2010 in the overall rankings, but PwC took home the accounting & professional services accolade and the overall number two spot. Also regularly featuring in the top 10 are household names such as Shell Malaysia, Sime Darby and IBM Malaysia.

Apart from ranking the top 200 graduate employers in the country, the survey also ranks the most attractive employers to fresh graduates according to 11 sectors and industries.

“The graduates of today are the leaders of tomorrow. By having industry-specific awards, we hope to encourage employers to refine their recruitment processes in order to attract the best fresh talents in the market,” says Lam.

Voting for 2011
GTI Media is now calls on all final-year students and fresh graduates to make their votes count by logging onto www.malaysias100.com to choose their top employers in the country. By completing the survey, they stand a chance to win attractive prizes which includes 20 exclusive invitations to attend Malaysia’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers Awards 2011 ceremony in November.

The glitzy event guarantees the opportunity to rub shoulders with the country’s top employers as it is attended by CEOs, senior recruitment professionals and managers of various industries. The poll closes August 31.

expose yourself to a different working culture – by immersing yourself in a different culture, you can learn things that you would otherwise never have the chance to experience.

challenge yourself to become more independent and self-motivated – because you will be leaving your comfort zone, and have tolearn how to fend for yourself. These challenges can change your life in ways you cannot imagine!

develop your soft skills - such as organizational, communication and leadership skills. This can come in handy not only when you are looking for a job, but also help you in other life situations.

develop a global mindset – by exposing yourself to a global learning environment, you can learn to think out of the box, and be more aware of the changes that are happening around the world.

enhance your resume – which can also increase your employability, and help you to get the job you want easier. An internship abroad can place you above other job applicants because of the increased value that your internship has given to your credibility.

gain awareness on world issues – such as HIV/AIDS, Entrepreneurship, Sustainability and Children’s Rights. You can also create impact on these issues by working in NGOs abroad that deal with these issues and make a difference in society.
